The effect of ultraviolet irradiation on the viability of entomopathogenic fungus, Lecanicillium (=Verticillium) lecanii (Zimmerman) Zare and Gams was studied under laboratory conditions at Biocontrol Research Laboratory of Entomology, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri, Maharashtra during 2002-04. The liquid formulation of L. lecanii with different adjuvants, viz., glycerol, Tween-80, Triton-x-100, boric acid, indigo, milk, turmeric and arachid oil were exposed to UV light for different exposure periods of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 min. The distance between exposed suspension and UV light source was 0.3 m. The UV rays proved detrimental to the growth and development of L. lecanii. The detrimental effect increased with increase in exposure period. However, glycerol, boric acid and Tween-80 gave good UV protection to L. lecanii, while milk, turmeric and indigo lack the UV protectability. Keywords

Effect of some adjuvant combinations on the growth of Verticillium lecanii (Zimmermann) Viegas in culture medium and the subsequent infection of Maconellicoccus hirsutus (Green) were evaluated at Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri, Maharashtra, during 2002-04. The treatment including V. l. + glycerol (8%) + Tween 80 (1%) + arachid oil (5%) proved to be the most promising, recording maximum surface coverage (92.00%) and biomass (32.10g) at 10 days of inoculation and bioefficacy at 14 days. However, it was on par with the formulations containing V. l. + glycerol 5% + Tween 80 1% + arachid oil 2% and V. l. + glycerol 2% + Tween 80 1% + arachid oil 0.5%. In terms of viability and virulence, V. l. + glycerol 2% + Tween 80 1% + arachid oil 0.5% and V. l. + glycerol 5% + Tween 80 1% + arachid oil 2% emerged as the best combinations. Keywords

Liquid formulations of entomopathogenic fungus, Verticillium lecanii (Zimmermann) Viegas were evaluated against spiralling whitefly, Aleurodicus dispersus Russell at Biocontrol Research Laboratory, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri, during 2002-04. The study revealed that liquid formulation A (VGTA 50512) and B (VGTA 50510-5) of V. lecanii caused 78.33 to 92.34 and 80.20 to 93.45 per cent mortality of the whitefly, respectively. V. lecanii at one per cent concentration gave the highest mortality of 92.34 per cent (Formulation A) and 93.45 per cent (Formulation B) respectively but it was on par with the concentration of 0.45 to 0.75 per cent. So, 0.45 per cent concentration of the liquid formulation is the most economical and feasible concentration for the control of the pest. Keywords

The entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschinikoff) Sorokin was mass produced in different liquid media. The nine media of various nutrient sources were evaluated to find out the most suitable medium for growth, biomass and viability of M.anisopliae. Sabouraud's dextrose broth with yeast extract proved to be the superior which gave significantly highest cfu (12.33x108/ml) and biomass (7.20g). The next best medium was Sabouraud's maltose broth with yeast extract and potato dextrose broth with yeast extract which registering cfu count of (10.33 × 108 and 10.67 × 108cfu/ml) and biomass (6.27 and 5.73 g), respectively. The lowest (48.33%) medium surface coverage and least biomass (1.57g) and cfu (4.33 × 108/ ml) were registered in medium with malt extract. Thus, considering growth, development and viability of M.anisopliae, Sabouraud's dextrose broth with yeast extract (SDY) emerged as the most potential medium for biomass production. Keywords

Studies on the effect of various adjuvants on growth and development of Verticillium lecanii (Zimmermann) Viegas was undertaken with a view to select suitable adjuvant for developing liquid formulation. The study revealed that there was increase in surface area covered (%) and biomass produced (gm) with increase in concentration of the inoculum. Among the different oils tested, significant surface area coverage was recorded in arachid oil @ 1.0 per cent followed by 0.1 to 0.5 per cent, respectively. Similar result was recorded in biomass production. Addition of arachid oil @ 1.0 per cent recorded maximum biomass of 28.40 g, followed by 0.5 per cent (25.2 g) and 0.1 per cent (23.5 g), respectively. Addition of oils and stickers resulted in increased surface area growth significantly. Addition of arachnid oil @ 5 per cent resulted in maximum surface area of biomass. Based on the results it is concluded that arachid oil could be used as adjuvant in the liquid formulation of V. lecanii isolated from spiraling whitefly. Keywords

The present research study was based on exploratory research design of social research. The field survey was carried out in Akola district of Vidarbha region of Maharashtra State during 2011-2012 for ascertaining the knowledge level of the onion growers about recommended cultivation practices for onion crop. The results revealed that 39.00 per cent of farmers had medium level of knowledge about recommended cultivation practices for onion crop followed by 35.00 per cent and 26.00 per cent of the farmers had high and low level of knowledge. In this context, it was implied that the information regarding recommended cultivation practices should be disseminated to the farmers by extension functionaries, KVK's, NGO's, through demonstrations, workshops, distributing printed material like leaflets; folders; etc. It will lend a hand for increasing knowledge, perception, adoption and ultimately the yield level of onion crop. Keywords
